Oregon Continuing Education FAQs

Question: When do I have to renew my license?
Answer: Licenses are good for two years and expire on the last day of your birth month. First licenses are valid from the date of issue for one year and then expire on the last day of your birth month. For example, if your birthday is in two months, and you receive your first license this month, your license will expire in 15 months. You must renew your license in the month it expires. The Real Estate Agency will send a license renewal notice to you a month before your license expires; however, it is your responsibility to make sure you renew your license on time.

Question: What are the requirements for license renewal?
Answer: You are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education courses in the two years prior to renewing a license on active status. All courses must be “real estate-oriented,” and 15 hours of the required courses must be in certain topic areas, including:

  • Trust Accounts
  • Misrepresentation

  • Property Management
  • Commercial Brokerage and Leasing
  • Real Estate Taxation:Federal, State and Local Agency
  • Fair Housing

Question: How do I renew my license?
Answer: You must send the Real Estate Agency a license renewal form signed by both you and your certifying licensee. (The Real Estate Agency will send you a license renewal form a month before your license expires.) Mail the completed and signed renewal form to the Real Estate Agency, along with the renewal fee. (If your renewal application is late, you'll have to pay an late fee as well.) Note that before your certifying licensee will sign your license renewal form, you must have completed your continuing education hours.

Question: What is a "certifying licensee?"
Answer: A "certifying licensee" is the principal broker or property manager who signs a statement on the license renewal form certifying that you have completed the required continuing education. Principal brokers and property managers self-certify their own continuing education.

Question: How can I show my Certifying Licensee that I've taken a Rockwell continuing education online class?
Answer: When you have finished taking Rockwell's online continuing education class, we will mail you a Certificate of Completion. This form is proof of your satisfactory completion of the course. Give the Certificate of Completion to your certifying licensee. He or she will keep this certificate on file for six years. It is recommended that you keep your own copy of the certificate as well.

Question: Am I required to take 30 hours while my license is on inactive status?

Question: My license was supposed to be renewed ten months ago but I didn't do it. Is it too late to renew the license?
Answer: No. You can renew your license up to one year after it expires. However, you will need to pay a $30 late fee in addition to your renewal fee.

Question: My license wasn't renewed within 12 months of expiration. Now what happens?
Answer: If you miss the 12-month deadline, you will lose your license permanently. If you decide to pursue real estate again in the future, you will have to complete all of the licensing requirements again, including a background check, pre-licensing education, and the license examination.
