California Real Estate License Requirements to Increase
Here’s how licensing works now: Once you successfully complete Real Estate Principles and get a passing score on the state license exam, you can apply for a conditional license. Within 18 months after the conditional license is issued, you’re required to complete two additional real estate courses: Real Estate Practice and an elective.
This is going to change as of October 1, 2007; no new conditional licenses will be issued after that. This means that all new license applicants will have to complete not one, but all three courses (Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and an elective) before they’re eligible to take the license exam.
However, students who pass the state exam and submit their license application paperwork before October 1, 2007, having completed only the Principles course, will still receive an 18-month conditional license.
Things to Remember
When you’re deciding which courses you should purchase, keep these things in mind:
- Most people take almost two months to complete the Principles (pre-license) course.
- A complete application (including the required course completion certificate, all forms, and a passing score on the state exam) must be postmarked before October 1 for the Department of Real Estate to consider an applicant for a conditional license.
- The current wait time for a license exam date is approximately three weeks. The Rockwell Institute anticipates this waiting period will get longer as more people attempt to get licensed before the deadline.
Start Now
- If you want to fulfill all licensing requirements and apply for a conditional license before October 1, we recommend that you start the Principles course no later than August 1.
- If you begin the licensing process after August 1, you should consider enrolling in all three courses. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to fulfill the requirements and apply by October 1, so you’ll probably need to complete all three courses before you can take the exam.
